Wondering how to recycle your Christmas tree in Northern Virginia? Here are some quick how-to instructions as well as some local drop off points in Northern Virginia.
*Make sure to sweep the needles that fall on your floor. Don't vacuum them. Needles can clog/puncture your vacuum cleaner.*
City of Arglington: Trash and recycling collectors are picking up Christmas trees for the first two weeks of January (until the 16th) if residents place their trees at their curbs no later than 6am on your trash collection day. If you are like me, and think that dragging a tree out your front door earlier than 6am in the morning is just not an option, I recommend doing this task the night before. Make sure to remove all decorations, stands, plastic bags, or anything else that is not tree is removed from the tree. If you don't have a trash service, you can drop off your tree at the Solid Waste Bureau. Call 703-228-6570 to set up an appointment, and make sure you have proof of residence when you go to drop off your tree.
Fairfax County: Trash and recycling collectors are picking up Christmas trees for the first two weeks of January if residents place their trees at their curbs. Remove all decorations! Fauquier County: Christmas trees are ONLY accepted at Corrall Farm Facility in Warrenton. Make sure to remove all decorations.

Prince William County: If PWC residents wish to recycle their Christmas tree, they can bring their tree to one of the following locations:
The Prince William County Landfill at 14811 Dumfries Road in Manassas - 703-792-4670
The Balls Ford Road Compost Facility located at 13000 Balls Ford Road in Manassas - 703-792-4670
Leesylvania State Park located at 2001 Daniel K. Ludwig Drive in Woodbridge (off of Neabsco Road). Christmas trees should be dropped off at Shelter #2. They will be used for the habitat.
Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC) located at 5399 Wellington Branch Road in Gainesville. until Jan. 12. The drop off area is located in the front parking lot (marked in orange cones). NOVEC will deliver the wood-chip mulch to interested customer-owners at no charge. (Cool, right?)
Some other alternatives:
- Cut your tree up to fit loosely into your waste container
- Nonprofit organizations (like some boy scout troops) will often charge around $5 to pick up a tree.
- Have a private fish pond? Trees sunk into the water provide great refuge and feeding areas for fish!
- Place your tree out in the yard or garden. Birds love them, especially if you feed them with hanging orange slices or popcorn. Once the tree dries out, the branches become brittle and easy to break. Not to mention, the needles with fall off OUTSIDE, where they'll act as mulch and then decompose into soil.
- Of course, if you or your neighbor has a chipper, you can grind that tree right up into amazing-smelling mulch!
Know how to recycle your Christmas tree and where your local drop off points are for Christmas trees. Involving the kids teaches them not only how to recycle just a Christmas tree, but how to better care for the over-all environment. Besides, Christmas tree mulch smells AMAZING.
Merry Recycling!
